Paypal Phishing Email Fraud Alert

I receive more phishing and fraudulent emails that are supposedly from paypal than from anyone else.  Not only are the paypal phishing emails the most frequent, they also look the most real - this, of course, is the biggest problem.

When you receive an email from paypal that looks exactly likely a legitimate email that you would receive when you make a transaction BUT with a transaction that you didn't make, it is typical to respond emotionally and 'push' the dispute transaction link - DON'T do this.  The email is a scam, and the link is not legitimate BUT a phishing link that will 'capture' your paypal account if used.

Below is an example of a fraudulent paypal transaction email - if/when you get one of these, just log into your paypal account and you will see that the transaction is not there, that the email is a scam.  In the event that you ever do have a problem, or disputed issue with paypal, always resolve it through the links in your account AND not through any links on an email.

11/20/2006 - New Paypal Phishing Alert

This time telling you that there is a dollar amount that is due from using the paypal service AND giving a link to click to pay the amount by a certain date OR you won't be able to use your paypal account.  The emotional response is to see that the amount is only $1.06 - so you click on the link to pay it so you don't lose account access, which then leads to being scammed out of your account information.

What is a fraudulent email?

A fraudulent (spoof) email pretends to be from a well-known company, such as PayPal or eBay, in an attempt to get personal information from you. People who send spoof emails hope to use your information - such as credit and debit card numbers or account passwords - to commit identity theft.

You can prevent spoof from affecting you

Spoof, or "phishing," emails - and the spoof websites often associated with them - are deceptive in appearance. However, they contain content that reveals they're fake. The most important thing to do to protect yourself is be able to spot this misleading content.

Know a spoof when you see it

Additional Security Requirements!

Dear mcsos@earthlink.com,

It has come to our attion that 98% of all fraudulent transactions are caused by members using stolen credit cards to purchase or sell non existant items. Thus we require our members to add a Debit/Check card to their billing records as part of our continuing commitment to protect your account and to reduce the instance of fraud on our website. Your Debit/Check card will only be used to identify you. If you could please take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and renew your records you will not run into any future problems with the PayPal® service. However, failure to confirm your records will result in your account suspension.

We are requesting this information to verify and protect your identity. Federal regulations require all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record identification from all persons opening new accounts or obtaining ongoing payment services. This is in order to prevent the use of the U.S. banking system in terrorist and other illegal activity. For these reasons, PayPal® will utilize services provided by various credit reporting agencies to verify the information you submit to us.

Once you have updated your account records your pending PayPal® account transactions will not be interrupted and will continue as normal.

To complete your PayPal account, you must click the link below and enter your additional required information on the following page to confirm your account.
